Step Back Disc Golf
Get Your Groove On...
540 Mines Road - Blue Hill, Maine
Step Back Disc Golf course is nestled upon a one hundred acre tract that surrounds Second (Douglas) Pond - just a five minute drive from the coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine.
The course combines scenic vistas, numerous terrain changes, and challenging play that can be enjoyed by both experienced and newbie disc golfers alike. The boulder-strewn landscape is complemented by an aesthetically balanced combination of towering white pines, dense spruce thickets, beech and red oak groves, and of course the ever-prevalent white birch.
The 70’s/80’s theme of the operation is all about slowing down and taking a “step back” in time to soak in the beauty of the land, listen to some timeless tunes, and learn about the local flora and fauna as well as the history of previous inhabitants.
When the 18 holes are complete, the course will offer a variety of approaches, tee and pin placements, and elevation changes. There is a par three over water and two holes that meander in and out of an old farm pasture. A “grip and rip” elevated tee shot from a twenty foot ledge, baskets atop boulders and rock piles, and some very “groovy” signage, keep things interesting. Just be careful not to get caught up in the Pinball Wizard on hole 1 !
The initial layout for the Step Back course took place in the fall of 2022. By winter of 2023, the front nine holes had been opened up. Course owner, Al Benner of nearby Brooksville, worked closely with Dana Carpenter of Johnsonville, Vermont for both the course layout and the initial clearing work. Dana has designed several courses in Vermont and is highly skillful at visualizing how holes can best integrate with existing terrain and then carving them out accordingly. During the summer of 2023, Al and his son Owen completed all the clearing of the front nine holes.
The front nine opened for play on May 18, 2024, and the back nine will be carved out over the next 1-2 years. The front nine is shorter in length, containing five par 3’s and four par 4’s. The back nine will be a bit longer with perhaps a par 5 and several par 4’s. There will also be a 20' tee shot off a ledge, and views of Second Pond.
There are also plans to have a lunch truck on site for the summer of 2024.
